Sporty Everyday Elegance from the Late 1960s – the 1968 Ford Taunus 15M TS Coupé
The 1960s were a period of profound change for the European automotive industry. The automobile was finally evolving from a mere means of transportation into an expression of a modern and increasingly individual lifestyle. Ford was among the manufacturers to embrace this development at an early stage, offering the Taunus as a model family that combined modern technology, contemporary design and everyday practicality.
With the P6 series, Ford introduced the Taunus 12M and 15M in 1966 as modern mid-size models. One of their technical highlights was front-wheel drive, which was by no means standard in this vehicle class at the time. The compact layout, with the drivetrain positioned transversely, allowed for a spacious and practical interior while giving the Taunus a distinctive technical character. The P6 was offered in several body styles, with the two-door coupé ranking among the most attractive versions.
As the sportier variant, the 15M TS occupied a special position within the range. The coupé combined the practical qualities of the Taunus with a more dynamic body design and an interesting level of technical specification for its time. The 1968 15M TS was powered by the proven 1,498 cc V4 engine. The unit produced 48 kW, or 65 hp, and developed 115 Nm of torque. Power was transmitted to the front wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. For a mid-size car of the late 1960s, this combination was technologically advanced and gave the Taunus a distinctive character.
The V4 engine itself is one of the defining features of this generation of Ford vehicles. Its compact design allowed it to be installed efficiently in the front of the car, while front-wheel drive was one of the P6's key technical characteristics. The 15M TS Coupé therefore combined straightforward mechanical engineering with a modern vehicle concept for its time. The 65 hp engine provided adequate performance, while the combination of compact dimensions and front-wheel drive gave the car an uncomplicated and well-mannered character.
The vehicle offered here dates from 1968 and is presented in classic white, combined with a red cloth and leather interior. This contrasting colour combination gives the coupé a distinctly period-correct appearance and highlights the P6's distinctive styling to great effect. With an indicated mileage of 45,300 kilometres, the Ford also offers an interesting proposition for a classic approaching six decades of age.
The Taunus 15M TS has been owned by its current female owner since 2019, when she purchased the coupé from a dealer in the Geneva region. Various documented works testify to the car's continuous care and maintenance. The braking system was dismantled and fitted with new brake pads as early as 2014, while the Ford received a new set of tyres in 2024. The vehicle passed its Swiss veteran inspection in 2019, confirming the period-correct and well-preserved character of this charming Taunus coupé.
