American Full-Size Elegance with V8 Power – the 1971 Dodge Dart
Few automobiles embody American car culture of the early 1970s as directly as a classic Dodge Dart. With its generous dimensions, powerful V8 and relaxed character, it is a quintessential example of an era in which comfort, effortless power and distinctive design were defining characteristics of American automobiles. The Dart was one of the important models in Dodge’s line-up, combining manageable dimensions for everyday use with the unmistakable V8 character that made American cars famous around the world.
The Dodge Dart was originally positioned as a more compact model within the Chrysler family and developed into a highly successful vehicle over several generations. For the 1971 model year, the series received a distinctive evolution of its bodywork. The clearly defined surfaces, broad front end and characteristic lines of the period give the Dart a confident appearance, while retaining the elegance typical of American sedans of the era.
Providing the appropriate power is the proven 5.2-litre V8 with 318 cubic inches of displacement. Its power delivery is characterised less by high-revving performance than by effortless torque and relaxed acceleration. Combined with the three-speed automatic transmission, it offers the comfortable driving experience typical of an American V8 from the early 1970s. Rear-wheel drive and the generous overall design make the Dart an enjoyable companion for longer journeys, while also giving it the unmistakable presence that continues to make classic American automobiles so fascinating.
The vehicle presented here is finished in an striking combination of red with a black roof, complemented by a red-and-black leather interior. This colour combination perfectly underlines the Dart’s characteristic appearance and authentically reflects the style of the early 1970s. The odometer currently shows 47,300 kilometres.
The documented ownership history is particularly interesting. The Dart was originally owned by a chauffeur employed by Ciba-Geigy at the time, where the Dodge was used as an executive vehicle. Since then, the car has remained within a limited number of ownership changes and has had only two owners in total.
In 2005, the Dodge underwent an extensive refurbishment. The front and rear seats were retrimmed in new leather, while the front seats were additionally re-padded. At the same time, the bodywork was refinished. The transmission was rebuilt, and in 2006 a completely new stainless-steel exhaust system was installed. Over the years, approximately CHF 56,700 has been invested in maintenance and technical work, providing impressive evidence of the care lavished on the vehicle.
The car’s entertainment system was also upgraded with an emphasis on combining modern functionality with a discreet installation. An Alpine CD system dating from 2006, featuring an 8-inch subwoofer, Hertz speaker system and Alpine CD changer, was installed so that the components remain largely hidden beneath the passenger seat and in the luggage compartment. This allows the Dart to combine its classic appearance with a contemporary listening experience without unnecessarily compromising the historic character of the interior.
In 2022, the whitewall tyres were replaced, while the original wheels were retained. The vehicle also comes with its original owner’s manual, further underlining the Dodge’s period authenticity and original specification.
Another important aspect for enthusiasts in Switzerland is its current veteran status: the Dodge successfully underwent its latest veteran inspection in August 2026. The sedan therefore presents itself not only as a charismatic representative of American automotive culture, but also as a properly registered classic suitable for contemporary use.
Today, this Dodge Dart offers an appealing opportunity to experience the character of American automobiles from this era at first hand. Its powerful V8, comfortable automatic transmission and generous interior make it a relaxed long-distance cruiser, while its distinctive colour combination and characteristic styling ensure an unmistakable presence.
