Style. Power. Tradition. – The 1955 Jaguar XK140 Roadster
Jaguar’s XK range was born in the late 1940s as a pragmatic solution to showcase the company’s first in-house engine: a long-stroke inline six-cylinder with twin overhead camshafts. Following its debut at the 1948 London Motor Show, orders for the XK120 quickly exceeded all expectations.
While the economic climate of the early 1950s was certainly favourable, the Jaguar itself had much to offer: the XK120 was the fastest production car in the world, relatively practical for everyday use and priced at little more than three times the cost of a Volkswagen Beetle. Add to this its strikingly streamlined design — not entirely unprecedented, perhaps, but compared with it, an MG of the same era looked little more than a soapbox.
The evolution of the XK120 arrived in 1954 in the form of the XK140. It featured slightly larger windows, increased interior space and a modern rack-and-pinion steering system. The XK140 offered here is an Open Two Seater — a true roadster in which the hood, once lowered, is completely concealed. The bodywork, interior and mechanical components have all been comprehensively restored and today present themselves in a highly desirable condition.
This Jaguar XK 140 Roadster (OTS) is presented in an honest and roadworthy condition. According to its chassis prefix “S” (S81051x), the car was originally delivered as the highly desirable Special Equipment model. Over the course of its life, the engine has been upgraded: it now features a robust XK 140 engine block (G7462) combined with a torque-rich B-type cylinder head (NA2911) from a Jaguar Mark VIII.
A Jaguar Heritage Certificate has been applied for in order to provide the buyer with complete and transparent documentation of the car’s original delivery specification. As the engine block and cylinder head do not correspond to the original chassis (non-matching numbers), the estimate has been adjusted accordingly. This, however, makes the car particularly appealing to drivers seeking a sound underlying structure and dependable mechanicals.

Auction hammer price and minimum bid
Auction hammer price and minimum bid
The bid is accepted by the highest bidder after the minimum price or higher has been reached, either after the bidding period has expired or at the moment when no further bids are submitted and the auction is closed by Emil Frey Classics.
Acceptance of the minimum bid – “Sold”
When the bid is accepted and the minimum bid (minimum price) or higher is reached, a legally binding purchase contract is concluded between the seller and the highest bidder.
Bid accepted below the minimum bid – “Reserved, not sold”
If a bid is made at a price below the minimum bid (minimum price), the vehicle is considered “not sold subject to reservation.” Vehicles that could not be sold during the auction or for which the minimum bid was not reached can be renegotiated after the auction in consultation with the consignor or owner. In such cases, Emil Frey Classics acts exclusively as an intermediary between the potential buyer and the consignor or owner, unless it expressly acts as the seller itself. A purchase contract is only concluded with the express consent of both parties.
Reservation of Emil Frey Classics
Emil Frey Classics reserves the right to decide freely on the acceptance of bids. In particular, it may refuse or cancel the bid, interrupt or cancel the auction, withdraw the auction item or put it up for auction again, and reject bids.
