A symbol of Italian elegance – the 1962 Maserati 3500 GTI Superleggera

This opulent vehicle attracted numerous buyers from the worlds of politics, high society and show business. As well as Prince Rainier III of Monaco, this model was also driven by Tony Curtis, Rock Hudson, Dean Martin and Anthony Quinn, among others.

The Maserati 3500 GTI Superleggera was one of the first mass-produced sports cars to feature mechanical fuel injection. Under the bonnet, there is a powerful 3.5-litre inline six-cylinder engine with 235 hp. Thanks to the Lucas fuel injection system and DOHC design, this vehicle clocks in an impressive top speed of 230 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in around 8 seconds. These technical aspects made the 3500 GTI one of the most powerful vehicles of its time. In total, 1400 cars of this model were built.

The 3500 GTI Superleggera was designed by the renowned Carrozzeria Touring and is a showcase of Italian elegance and aerodynamic efficiency. The Superleggera technology, featuring aluminium bodywork on a light steel frame, lends the vehicle unmistakable lightness as well as extraordinary stability and strength.

The 3500 GTI’s interior invites you in with its soft leather seats and fine wood panelling, which create an atmosphere of luxury and class. Behind the clean and simple steering wheel, your gaze is drawn to an array of dials that initially make the dashboard seem like a command centre.

The Maserati’s bodywork sits on a tubular frame. The front independent suspension with coil springs and the rigid rear axle’s leaf springs make for a sporty driving experience and outstanding roadholding. The powerful disc brakes by Girling an all four wheels provide reliable braking performance and enhanced safety. The vehicle is also equipped with a ZF five-speed gearshift, ensuring precise and smooth changing of gears.

Our auction vehicle was delivered to its original owner in Baselland in June 1962, where it was kept in his family’s possession for over 20 years. Its current owner bought the car at an auction in 2009. When new, the car was supplied in the colour bianco, before being repainted in rosso inglese in the course of a complete frame-up restoration between 2000 and 2005. In 2018, the car underwent a complete engine overhaul. This was also taken as an opportunity to fit a chrome steel exhaust system. To round off these extensive restorations, alterations were also made to the interior in 2018.

The car is in very good condition. This beautiful and well looked after Maserati is sure to delight its new owner. Needless to say, this vehicle holds veteran status from april 2025. Extensive documentation about the restoration works will be supplied with the vehicle.
